Additional Names from Civil Death Records Ireland

The following names are from the General Register of deaths, Buncrana but do not appear on the memorials in Fahan or Cockhill. It is possible the names were wrongly transcribed in the register, that the men were buried elsewhere, or that there names were missed from the local memorials even though they are buried there.

Percy Carr, Stoker, RNR
Hiles, Stoker, RNR
Arthur Henderson, Leading Seaman (possibly Arthur Richardson who is on the memorial in Fahan but not in  death register).
C. Norris, Chief Gunners Mate, RN
J. Parker, RMLI
William Thompson (possibly John Thompson who is on the memorial in Fahan but not in death register)

The memorial in St Mura’s churchyard, Fahan, records the names of 65 men plus three who were never identified. However the church register tells us that 73 men were buried in the mass grave in Fahan. We know that 4 more unidentified men’s deaths were registered on the 19th of May 1917 in Buncrana. It is likely that they are also buried in Fahan.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

  1. Carol Cregeen says:

John Christian was from Ramsey in the Isle of Man not Liverpool.
The five men who were lost on the Laurentic from the Isle of Man (plus two who survived) should not be listed with those ‘from England’ the Isle of Man is not part of England or the United Kingdom, it is part of the British Isles. Grouping the Isle of Man with England is like putting New Zealand and Australia together or Canada and the US!
    Thank you.

Hi Carol, sorry for any confusion in this regard. Checking over what information we have gathered on John, it’s clear you’re correct. We see his birth recorded in Ramsey, but we included him the roll for Liverpool because this was his place of residence and that of his wife and his parents. We are currently researching his story for the Legacy page to give a fuller picture. I’m sure you’ll understand how difficult some of this work can be, some of the records are very hard to come by, and in some cases, the records are just plain wrong! More than once we have found people recorded as dying on the Laurentic on 25th January 1917 when in fact they had died days, or indeed weeks before. The voluntary effort to create the archive is a time consuming process, and we greatly appreciate any input people can offer. If you have any material relating to John Christian that you would be willing to share, it would be greatly appreciated. At present we have only a few records relating to his birth, parents and marriage. Thanks again for getting in touch. We’ll look at correcting his details.

  2. Denine Ellis says:

Hi, my great grandfather was on board the Laurentic when it sank, his body was never recovered. His name was Simeon Morris but he went by Simeon Rogers, which was his mother’s maiden name. His wife was Bertha (McCarte) Morris, my great grandmother. They were married in St.John’s, Newfoundland. Three of their children’s names were Gordon, Evelyn and Jean. Bertha was pregnant with their 4th child(John),when Simeon died as far as I can tell. We couldn’t find birth records for my great uncle John who went by the name of Jack. Uncle Jack served in WW2. I don’t have a lot of information on Simeon Rogers and no pictures. If you have more information on him, I would love to hear from you. Or if there is anything I can help with, please let know. Thank you Denine

Thanks for getting in touch Denine. Due to personal circumstances over the past nine months we’ve had to pause our work on the Laurentic research but are beginning to work on it again now. Thank you for the details on your great grandfather. We will get back to you with anything else we have found.
